STEMskiller: Skill Set Map for Mentors of Early Career Researchers

CAREER MANAGEMENT: Wellness/wellbeing & personal effectiveness

Personality & self-management

Definition:

Every mentee is an individual, and mentors should remember that “one-size-fits-all” approaches may not be flexible enough for encouraging mentees to foster self-management/independence skills. The following resources may provide assistance in this area. Additionally, mentors may craft mentoring statements in order to make expectations clear to mentees so that they can work independently towards common mentor/mentee goals.

Useful resources on Personality & self-management:

Colón-Ramos D. A. (2018). Statements of Mentorship. eNeuro5(6), ENEURO.0411-18.2018. https://doi.org/10.1523/ENEURO.0411-18.2018

Describes why a mentor might consider writing a mentorship statement with additional reading on this topic.

The Wellbeing Thesis. (2020). Taking Control to Make This Work for You. https://thewellbeingthesis.org.uk/taking-control-to-make-this-work-for-you/

Useful sections that can be read individually by mentees on: Working With Uncertainty, Using Multiple Identities to Your Advantage, The Importance of Planned Structure, Stages of Postgraduate Research (PGR) Student Identity, Predictable Time Off, Marking Your Progress – Celebrating Your Wins, Linking Back to Meaning and Goals, Challenges of Freedom and Responsibility, and Building Your Identity as  Researcher – Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
