Inclusive mentoring

Definition:

Different institutions have different definitions for “diverse” student populations based on local circumstances. Mentors may struggle with inclusivity issues in this area, particularly in STEM-related fields. Resources listed below provide guidance regarding inclusivity issues.

Useful resources on Inclusive mentoring:

MIT Career Advising & Professional Development. (2020). Diversity Resources. https://capd.mit.edu/resources/diversity-resources

In addition to serving as a model for other institutions, this page includes useful “Tips for successfully navigating conferences” and additional “Identity Based Resources” (i.e., career and networking resources) for the U.S. context: African American/Black, Asian American & Pacific Islander, Undocumented (i.e., non-citizen), First Generation, Latino/a/x, LGBTQ, Multiracial/Multiethnic, Native American, Students of Color, Students with Disabilities, Veterans, Women.

The National Academies Press. (2020). Diversity and Inclusion in STEMM Collection. https://www.nap.edu/collection/81/diversity-and-inclusion-in-stemm

Freely-available, high-quality reports and proceedings on topics such as “Promising Practices for Addressing the Underrepresentation of Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine: Opening Doors,” “Surmounting the Barriers: Ethnic Diversity in Engineering Education: Summary of a Workshop,” “An American Crisis: The Growing Absence of Black Men in Medicine and Science: Proceedings of a Joint Workshop,” and beyond.

UC Berkeley Division of Equity & Inclusion. (2020). STEM Equity & Inclusion (E&I) Initiative. https://diversity.berkeley.edu/initiatives/stem-equity-and-inclusion-initiative

Descriptions of programs and a “Read, Watch, Listen, & Engage” space that includes a plethora of additional learning materials (books, podcasts, talks and interviews, documentaries and movies, and conferences and workshops). Model for institutions planning to develop E&I initiatives.

The Ohio State University University Libraries. (2021). Overview & Starting Places: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Science & Engineeringhttps://guides.osu.edu/edistem

Guide to these issues in STEM fields. Includes recommended journals, information about underrepresented groups, disciplinary information, and historical and biographical content links.
